Health & Safety Around Animals

At High Farm Holiday Park, the safety of our visitors is very important to us. While spending time with animals is a wonderful experience, it’s important to be aware that some farm animals can carry germs that may cause illness in humans.

These include infections such as Cryptosporidium, Campylobacter and Salmonella, which can be spread through hand-to-mouth contact after touching animals or contaminated surfaces.

Young children are particularly at risk, as it can be difficult to prevent them from putting their hands in their mouths. For this reason, we kindly ask that children under 3 years old do not touch the animals.

General Health & Safety Guidelines

To help everyone enjoy their visit safely, please follow these simple rules:

Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and running water after touching animals and before eating or drinking

Use hand sanitiser as an extra precaution, but not as a replacement for handwashing

Eat and drink only in designated areas

Do not allow children to eat snacks, sweets, or put their fingers in their mouths while around animals

Do not allow children to kiss the animals

Children must not drink from animal water troughs

Cover all cuts, grazes, or wounds with a waterproof dressing

If a dummy falls on the ground, do not put it back into a child’s mouth

Wear suitable clothing and footwear for a farm environment

Do not climb on fences, gates, or walls

Smoking is only permitted in the designated car park area

Please ensure all members of your group are aware of and follow these guidelines

Children must be supervised at all times

Guidance for Pregnant Visitors

There is a small risk associated with contact between pregnant women and certain farm animals, particularly around lambing time.

Sheep may carry an organism (Chlamydia psittaci) which, in rare cases, can cause complications during pregnancy.

As a precaution, pregnant visitors should avoid contact with newborn lambs, kids, and any animal birthing materials.

Supervision Ratios for Group Visits

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, we follow recommended supervision guidelines:

Under 1 year: 1 adult to 1 child

Ages 1–2: 1 adult to 2 children

Ages 2–3: 1 adult to 3 children

Ages 3–5: 1 adult to 4 children

Ages 5–8: 1 adult to 8 children

If adequate supervision cannot be maintained, children should not have direct contact with animals.
